3D Printed Car to Drive Across the US

A car made mostly from parts created by a 3 dimensional printer will reportedly be making a road trip across the United States from New York City to San Francisco and back when the vehicle is completed in about two years.

It's a hybrid electric ethanol powered car, named Urbee 2.

The vehicle's return trip will trace the historic first US cross country road trip route used by Horatio Nelson Jackson and Sewall K. Crocker back in 1903.

But since the Urbee 2 uses electric power and ethanol, the car can drive for hundreds of miles per gallon, and the drivers plan to use only about 10 gallons of fuel each way.

Urbee 2 is designed to be efficient and aerodynamic, weighing about 12 hundred pounds and reaching speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.

Jim Kor, president of Kor Ecologic, and leader of the vehicle design and build project said: "With Urbee 2, more than 50 percent of the car will be 3D printed. Everything you typically see and touch on the car, as you drive the car, will be 3D printed."

This method of manufacturing reduces costs, and Kor hopes that after a successful cross country road trip, they will be able to make Urbee 2 available to the public for a cost of anywhere from 16 thousand to 50 thousand dollars.
