Where Do Poorest People Live?

Where do the poorest people in the world live?

According to estimates from the World Bank, Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest concentration of people living in extreme poverty, on less than a dollar and 25 cents a day.

The most recent estimates say that 1.2 billion people are living in extreme poverty, compared with 1.9 billion thirty years ago, even though the human population has increased by 60 percent.

Going from an extreme poverty rate of 84 percent in 1981, to just 12 percent in 2010, China has seen the most drastic change.

Around half of the world's population lives in rural areas, while rapid urbanization has led to a decrease in extreme poverty.

The leader of the World Bank Doctor Jim Yong Kim wants to put an end to extreme poverty by the year 2030.

Kim has a plan, which includes "eliminating bottlenecks; additional investment in infrastructure; and to ensure that the poor participate in the benefits of growth, much greater investments in education and healthcare."

He also encourages "promoting shared prosperity by fostering income growth of the bottom 40% of the population in every country."
